Ingredients
In-N-Out Style Grilled Diced Onions

  • 1 medium yellow onion
  • ½ tbsp neutral oil
  • Pinch of salt
  • Splash of water

Instructions

  1. Dice the onion small.
  2. Peel and finely dice the onion into small pieces so they cook evenly and mix well into the spread.
  3. Heat the pan or griddle.
  4. Heat a skillet or flat top over medium heat. Add the oil.
  5. Cook the onions.
  6. Add the diced onions and a pinch of salt. Stir and spread them out so they cook evenly.
  7. Soften and lightly brown.
  8. Cook for 6–10 minutes, stirring occasionally. You want them soft, slightly golden, and jammy, not super dark.

  • Optional steaming trick: If they start browning too fast, add 1–2 tsp water and stir. This softens them like the ones from burger spots.
  1. Cool before using.
  2. Let them cool before mixing into your spread so the sauce doesn’t get watery.
