Kewpie Synergy

KEWPIE Mayonnaise plays a crucial role in elevating this Okonomiyaki Burger to new heights. Its rich, creamy texture and subtle sweetness perfectly complement the savory flavors of the okonomiyaki patty and the tangy okonomiyaki sauce. By spreading KEWPIE Mayonnaise on the burger buns before toasting, you create a golden, crispy crust that adds an extra layer of flavor and texture to the burger. The mayonnaise also acts as a delicious glue, holding all the components together and ensuring that every bite is a perfect combination of flavors.

Ingredients: Serves 4

For Okonomiyaki

  • ¼ cup Okonomiyaki Mix*
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 egg
  • ½ pkg (approx 7oz) cole slaw mix
  • 4 strips thick bacon, cut into half
  • Olive oil

For the Burgers

  • 4 fried eggs
  • 4 hamburger buns, split
  • Okonomiyaki sauce*
  • KEWPIE Mayonnaise
  • Aonori (dried greenaver)*, optional

  1. Prepare the Okonomiyaki patties: In a bowl, whisk together the Okonomiyaki mix, water, and egg until well combined. Add the cole slaw mix and fold it into the batter. Heat 1 tsp. of olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Place two pieces of bacon in a cross shape and repeat with the remaining bacon. Scoop ¼ of the cabbage batter onto each bacon cross, forming a patty approximately 3.5″ in diameter. Cover the pan with a lid and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the lid, flip the Okonomiyaki pancakes, and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer the patties to a plate and set aside.
  2. Assemble the burgers: Spread ½ Tbsp. of KEWPIE Mayonnaise on each side of the hamburger buns. Grill or pan-fry the buns, mayonnaise side down, until lightly crispy. Place an Okonomiyaki patty on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Drizzle with okonomiyaki sauce and KEWPIE Mayonnaise, and sprinkle with Aonori (if using). Top each patty with a fried egg and the top half of the bun.
  3. Serve and enjoy: Serve your Okonomiyaki Burgers immediately while they’re still hot. Enjoy the harmonious blend of Japanese and American flavors in every bite.

Kewpie Pro Tip

To make your Okonomiyaki Burgers even more authentic, try adding some finely chopped pickled ginger to the okonomiyaki batter. This will give your patties a subtle, tangy kick that perfectly complements the savory flavors. You can also experiment with different toppings, such as bonito flakes, thinly sliced scallions, or a drizzle of ponzu sauce. Don’t be afraid to get creative and make this fusion burger your own. With KEWPIE Mayonnaise as your trusty condiment, you can’t go wrong!
